Basement Insulation Options for Utah Homes
Ready to take your unfinished basement from makeshift cold storage to your new favorite place to relax and rewind? Don’t forget to insulate!
Insulating your basement provides a number of benefits, including temperature control, moisture prevention, and even noise reduction. The type of insulation you choose can also help save on costs.
Batt and Roll Insulation
Batt and roll insulation is the most common type of insulation you will find in homes. Typically made from flexible fiberglass fibers, batt and roll insulation is one of the more inexpensive options (around $0.90-$1.55 per square foot) that provides great temperature control and moisture prevention.
With how flexible it is, t’s extremely easy to apply to basement walls. We highly recommend using a batt and roll insulation with a flame-resistant facing to provide extra protection if you go with this option.
Foam Board or Rigid Foam
Foam board and rigid foam insulation is great for an extra level of thermal resistance (up to two times more than other types of insulation of the same thickness), which makes it excellent to use around structural supports like wood studs and steel beams.
With foam board or rigid foam, you can easily keep the heat in your home during the cold Utah winters and the cool air in during the hot summer months.
Average cost of foam board or rigid foam: $1.65-$2.75 per square foot.
Sprayed Foam
Sprayed foam is a liquid type of insulation that is perfect for nearly every part of your basement, especially on the ceiling. Not only will this help provide an extra air barrier, it can also help dampen any noise produced by people walking around on the level above.
As the spray foam expands and hardens, it creates a better seal around any potential holes and cracks you may have in your basement.
What you save in time and ease of application is made up for in cost. The average cost of sprayed foam is $1.47-$3.80 per square foot. But if you have the budget for it, it’s a great investment that will save tremendously in future heating and cooling.
